Drew Carey Pledges to Donate Up to $1 Million to LiveStrong; Offers $1 Per Twitter Follower

Some people say Twitter.com is a worthless waste of time, and that it is full of self-indulgent narcissists. Drew Carey is proving otherwise, and is pledging to donate $1 to LiveStrong for every Twitter follower he acquires through the end of 2009, up to $1 million total.
A man by the name of Drew Olanoff, a cancer-fighter and blogger, is auctioning off his short and enviable Twitter username - @drew - to benefit the LiveStrong foundation. Olanoff said the he thought someone might bid $10,000 on the last day, but never imagined that Drew Carey would catch wind of it.
But of course he did. An active Twitter user (@DrewFromTV), Carey surpassed Olanoff's $10,000 expectation by tweeting an initial bid of $25,000. But then he decided to quadruple his offer, upping it to $100,000 if his Twitter followers totaled 100,000 by the auction's close at midnight on November 9.
Then during an interview with CBS, Carey upped his offer once again. He is now offering to donate a total of $1 million if he can get 1 million followers by midnight on December 31. If he doesn't reach a million followers, the donation will be prorated: If there are 500,000 followers when the clock strikes midnight, then $500,000 will be given to LiveStrong.
Clearly, unless Dr. Drew Pinsky becomes involved in a bidding war for the Twitter name, Drew Carey will capture the name and donate a generous $1 per Twitter follower, up to $1 million.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the Price is Right host has 75,854 Twitter followers, and that number is rapidly climbing. There's still plenty of time follow him yourself and spread the word.
Sure, Twitter has its fair share of narcissists, but the Cleveland comedian is not one of them. While it may appear he has gotten himself into a popularity game, it's not. It's simply a publicity stunt to raise awareness and money for an organization that obviously is important to him.
LiveStrong is not the first charitable organization that Carey has donated money to, and we doubt that it will be his last. In 2000 he famously donated all of his winnings ($500,000) from an appearance on a special celebrity edition of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" to Ohio public libraries, and was also at the same time working on a series of public service announcements for the Ohio Library Council.
