Richard Zednik, a striker for the Florida Panthers NHL hockey team, was seriously wounded Sunday night by a skate blade of teammate Olli Jokinen in a game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Zednik, who was behind the play and skating into the corner at the Sabres' end of the ice, when teammate Jokinen was upended by Sabres' forward Clarke MacArthur. Jokinen fell headfirst onto the ice, while his right leg flew up and struck Zednick directly on the side of his neck.

Zednik began bleeding heavily, and was taken to the bench. Team doctors soon realized the severity of his wound, and had him transported to a hospital in Buffalo.

After a 15 minute delay, the game resumed. The NHL said the decision to resume the game was made when it was announced that Zednik was in stable condition.

Panthers' head coach Jacques Martin said, "It is something really unfortunate. It is scary, something you don't wish to see. I just home he comes out of it fine."

Buffalo won the match, 5-3.
