Copper Theft Blamed for AT&T Outage in Cleveland

AT&T says that it has finally restored phone, cable and alarm service to nearly 2,000 Cleveland customers who discovered their services had been knocked out last week after 750 feet of copper wire was stolen from beneath a bridge. AT&T says that this was the second major theft of copper cable since April from a bridge carrying state Route 10 traffic over the Cuyahoga River just south of downtown Cleveland.

The theft which occurred Thursday morning disrupted AT&T service in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland until Monday.

AT&T estimated the damage at $25,000. The previous copper heist in April from the exact same location was valued at $100,000.

AT&T speculates that the thieves are taking the copper to sell for scrap. Police are currently investigating both the May 21 and April 1 thefts.
