What They Say About Incoming Prospects Indians Acquired for Cliff Lee

By now you already know that the Cleveland Indians parted ways with Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco. So who are the newest incoming members of the Tribe? Here is a rundown on the newest Indians.

Carlos Carrasco

Carlos Carrasco is listed as the 28th ranked prospect in Major League Baseball. The right hander is 22 years old but has struggled a bit this year giving up more hits than innings pitched and yielding more than 5 earned runs per game.

Scouting report: He can touch 95 mph with his fastball, but it usually sits at 92. His curve is average, but the changeup, which has sink, is a plus pitch at times and is particularly tough against left-handed hitters. He needs to pitch off fastball more.

Lou Marson

Lou Marson (.294 Avg 1 HR 24 RBI in 211 At Bats) is listed as one of the top 50 prospects in the Major Leagues. The Indians getting him from Philadelphia likely means that rumors are true that Victor Martinez will likely be traded before the deadline like Marc DeRosa, Ryan Garko, and Lee before him. Here is what his scouting report says about the 23 year old Triple A player who is said to be a future everyday major league catcher.

Scouting report: An athletic backstop who can hit for average and knows how to get on base. He has some extra-base power, but it's not a strength. His quick release and accurate arm enable him to throw runners out. Also has off-the-charts makeup and handles a staff well.

Jason Donald

Jason Donald is a 23 year old Triple A Player who is currently hitting .230 with 1 home run and 16 RBI. In Double A last season showed promise hitting over .300 with double digits in both homers and steals in 362 at bats. Was a 3rd round draft pick after playing college ball at Arizona.

Jason Knapp

Jason Knapp is the lone low-level prospect coming to the Tribe. The former second round pick by the Phillies is a hard throwing right hander and only 18 years old. USA Today ran this story on him earlier this year:

The right-hander's fastball, which has reached 97 mph in his first three games for Class A Lakewood (N.J.), is a good start. So is his 6-5, 215-pound frame, which provides much of the power behind the 30 strikeouts and just nine hits allowed in 18 1/3 innings for the 2008 second-round draft choice.

And then there's an aggressiveness that more than makes up for any concerns the Phillies might have about turning loose a kid who won't turn 19 until Aug. 31 in a full-season league.

"He's an animal," Phillies minor league pitching coordinator Gorman Heimueller says. "He believes he's good. That's something you've got to have, that cockiness in a good way."

Games like Knapp's team record-tying 14 strikeouts in seven innings in his third start can do wonders for the confidence of a teenager playing about 60 miles from his Annandale, N.J., home.
