Battle of the Breakfast 2009: Denny's vs. IHOP

This month features the ultimate battle in breakfast food freebies, with both Denny's and IHOP restaurants attempting to lure in customers by offering free food.

On Tuesday, February 3, Denny's (NASDAQ: DENN) is offering a free a Grand Slam and coupon book to all customers that show up between 6am and 2pm. If you're not a frequent Denny's visitor, a Grand Slam consists of 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 sausages, 2 slices of bacon.

On Tuesday, February 24 it's National Pancake Day at IHOP, where from 7am to 10pm all customers will be treated to a free short stack of pancakes. For those of you who don't know what a short stack is, its three pancakes. All they ask is that you consider making a donation to a local children's hospital, through the Children's Miracle Network or other means.

So which deal will you go for? Dennys or IHOP, or both? Me? I'll be staying home. No free meal is worth the inevitably long wait at either restaurant.

Fat America! This should definitely help.

Wrong Date for National Pancake Day

This story has the incorrect date for National Pancake Day at IHOP. Apparently, they have last year's date. National Pancake Day is on February 24. It is always on Fat Tuesday because it is a real day, not just a made up day. Thank you.

ihop does it for donations, not for gaining customers!

ihop does their "free" day for charity to help childrens miracle network as they have always sold balloons for the same cause later in the year. Its strickly donations not to gain customers...

as if i hop is only doing

as if i hop is only doing this to get donations?????????? i am sure that there is an ulterior motive to their freebee.......like getting more guests..............lets be serious now......

To as if IHOP is only doing:

To as if IHOP is only doing: yeah, IHOP does do it for donations thats it. There is no ulterior motive, actually it cost us more money. Getting more guest?? Are you serious? When was the last time you stepped into an IHOP especailly on a Saturday or Sunday? IHOP has a loyal following as it is and doesn't have to give away free pancakes to get guest. Its a shame that some people just can't let others do something nice for those in need without ridiculing them.

To as if IHOP is only doing

To as if IHOP is only doing : Newsflash IHOP really only does it for donations. If anything it cost us more money. Getting more guest are you serious? Whens the last time you stepped foot into an IHOP especially on a Saturday or Sunday. I thinks its pretty clear that IHOP has it loyal following of customers, and does not need to give away free pancakes to get customers in the door. Its such a shame that you can't do something nice for those in need without others ridiculing it and trying to find an "ulterior motive".

I'm a manager for an IHOP in

I'm a manager for an IHOP in Austin Texas, and no, unlike Denny's, we are not doing "Free Pancake Day" to gain new guests. If that happens, then GREAT!! But, we are trying to help the children's miracle network and the shriner's hospitals raise money. FYI: it takes the shriner's hospitals 91,000.00 a day to run ONE hospital. The company that owns the IHOP I work for is trying to raise 182,000.00 so that we can run each of the 2 shriners hospitals here is Texas for a day. You don't have to wait for Fat Tuesday to make donations either. If you live in centeral Texas, you can go to any of the IHOPs in the area and make a donation now. And, unlike other organizations that "take donations", we are giving 100% to the merical network and shriners. IHOP keeps nothing but a great feeling that we made a difference in the lives of famlies that need these organizations.
I also want to make mention that Tuesday Feb 3 was an AWSOME day at IHOP for the simple reason that Denny's couldn't accomidate all the people that went to get their free food. IHOPs all over Austin were SLAMED with Denny's over flow and people that were upset with the service and the poeple that were mad that some of the Denny's ran out of eggs and pancake batter. If you serve eggs and pancakes all day long and are planning to give them away, how do you run out? It was a poorly planned event on Denny's part but, THANK YOU!! Due to that, IHOP has gained several new guests and regained some that had forgotten how good we are.
