Television Review: Showtime Scores a Big Hit With Edie Falco Show "Nurse Jackie"

What better a way to make a splash on cable TV than to lure a former Sopranos star to headline a new program? This is exactly what Showtime did, flexing their muscles against rival HBO by nabbing Edie Falco, who's most famous for playing Carmela Soprano, to star in the new hospital dramedy "Nurse Jackie." While medical comedies and dramas are definitely "been there, done that", Showtime's new Monday night series offers a unique and refreshing look at life inside a hospital - from the viewpoint of a nurse.
Although she works at a Catholic hospital in the heart of New York, Jackie Peyton (Falco) is far from being a saint. In fact in one episode she quotes St. Augustine, who once said "Please God, make me good, but not just yet", which is more than fitting for the pill-popping nurse who enjoys dalliances with the pharmacist to keep her supply of drugs flowing, steals from the rich to give to the poor, and selectively punishes those who she believes have done wrong. Jackie is constantly crossing moral lines, but mostly with good intentions - well, except for her penchant for popping uppers and downers and cheating on her husband. She's smart, she's tough, and she won't take shit from anyone, but there's a softer side to Jackie, and as viewers we can see that she genuinely cares.
Jon & Kate Gosselin Have a Big Announcement

Jon and Kate Gosselin from the TLC program "Jon & Kate Plus 8" revealed this week that they have a major announcement to make. Their marriage has been on the rocks for sometime, and the continued media intrusion and speculation can't have helped things. On Monday during a special episode, the two will make an announcement, and according to the promo spots now appearing on TLC, it's a big one.
Given their well-documented issues, one could only guess that either they're going to announce that they are finally splitting up, or that perhaps they've decided to step out of the limelight, end the show, and work on fixing their problems without the cameras constantly following them.
Or, the promo could be a big teaser, and the big announcement could be about something else altogether. We won't know until it airs.
Will you be watching? What do you think the announcement will be?
David Letterman Issues Another Apology to Palin Family

David Letterman issued another apology regarding the tasteless joke about Alex Rodriguez and Sarah Palin's teenage daughter. Letterman took some time from his show to say:
"A bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.”
"So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much.”
Sarah Palin accepted Letterman's mia culpa declaration saying in written statement:
"Of course it's accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who 'joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve," the statement read.
Kirstie Allie Scores Her Own Weight Loss Reality Show

Sometimes being a fat slob really pays off. For Kirstie Allie, while the extra weight may have garnered her some unwanted attention and comments, it's also gained her something else she hadn't had in over a decade- attention. She got her own comedy series (Fat Actress), a sponsorship deal from Jennie Craig, and appearances on Oprah. Now that she's piled the weight back on, it's landed her a reality show dedicated to her weight loss efforts.
After gaining a whopping 85 pounds since leaving Jennie Craig in February 2008, Kirstie is hoping to shed some weight again and get back down to a healthier size.
According to Life & Style, Kirstie's new reality show will focus on her weight loss and the struggles involved. It will reportedly "have lots of emotion and show her struggle to lose the weight."
Adam Lambert Admits He is Gay, Was Attracted to Kris Allen

American Idol star Adam Lambert has given a revealing look at himself to rock magazine Rolling Stone. The star confirms rumors that he is a homosexual saying:
"I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear I'm gay." He explains: "I've been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man. I've been at clubs drunk making out with somebody in the corner."
Lambert also says that he was attracted to fellow Idol and eventual winner Kris Allen stating:
"They put me with the cute guy (talking about the dressing room he shared with Allen). Distracting! He's the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type — except that he has a wife. I mean he's open-minded and liberal, but he's definitely 100% straight."
TLC Looking for Participants for New Show on Multiples

Should Jon & Kate Be Worried?
"Jon & Kate Plus 8" has been a huge success for TLC, but recently it appears the couple have been having some problems. There are problems in their marriage, as well as a new investigation into child labor laws which threaten to shut the show down. Instead of banking solely on this show, TLC is now looking to expand their line-up of programs focused on multiples, and has posted an ad on Craigslist looking for new families.
The ad, which was recently removed from the site, read:
"TLC is now looking for NY, NJ, and CT families who are expecting twins, triplets, or more! We would capture the birth of the babies and witness their amazing first breath, first cry, and all the emotions that go along with such an incredible occasion. Then, TLC will be there as you leave the hospital and adjust to your first few days at home as a family."
That sounds quite a bit like the first season of "Jon & Kate". Either they're on the outs at TLC, or TLC is hoping to cash in on the multiple madness by adding another similar show to the line-up.
Conan O'Brien Hosted "Tonight Show" Was a Success

On Monday night, Conan O'Brien made his debut as the host of "The Tonight Show". Most recently the show was hosted by Jay Leno, who was preceded by Steve Allen, Jack Paar, and Johnny Carson.
In his opening night monologue, Conan quipped:
"I think I've timed this move perfectly. I'm on a last-place network, I moved to a state that's bankrupt and 'The Tonight Show' is sponsored by General Motors."
Previously, O'Brien spent 17 years as the host of "Late Night" on NBC in New York City. His move to the west coast has been in the works for nearly five years now. On the set of "The Tonight Show", O'Brien's first guest was an equally silly comedian - Will Ferrell - who offered him some tips for Los Angeles life.
The musical guest of the evening was Pearl Jam, who debuted a new song off of an upcoming album. Will Ferrell also sang a song in tribute to O'Brien
Pearl Jam was the musical guest, debuting a song off an upcoming album. Ferrell also sang a song in tribute to Conan - "Never Can Say Goodbye." Why sing a goodbye song on his first night on the show?
As Will said:
"Don't get me wrong, I'm pulling for you. But this little thing is a crapshoot at best."
Eminem's Walkout at MTV Movie Awards Was Staged
After gay Austrian fashion designer Bruno landed facedown on his lap last night, Eminem walked out of the MTV Movie Awards. Eminem wasn't the slightest bit impressed when with his rear end in his face, Bruno said "Eminem, nice to meet you."
After Eminem bodyguards struggled to get Bruno, played by Sacha Baron Cohen, off of him, the rapper quickly fled the scene.
Was Eminem truly offended by the landing, or was this all just a big ruse staged by MTV? Sources reveal that it was in fact a staged event. Afterall, the camera also just happened to be positioned in the aisle well enough to catch a glimpse of Eminem storming out.
Even more suggestive of the fakery is producer Mark Burnett's comments about the awards show prior to it's start. He told Hollyscoop.com:
"Eminem — It's epic tonight! It's epic!"
Eminem's performance wasn't that amazing, so Burnett must have been talking about something else.
Conan O'Brien Set to Take Over NBC's "Tonight Show" Next Monday

Fans of comedian and "Late Night" talk show host Conan O'Brien shouldn't worry that he will completely revamp his comedic style when he takes over NBC's "Tonight Show" from Jay Leno next Monday. Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, O'Brien said:
"I think sometimes, especially in 2009, people can overstate the idea that there's a comedy barrier that separates 11:30 and 12:30 and that you'll ignite antimatter if you bring 12:30 comedy into the 11:30 hour,. But DVRs have changed everything. The Internet has changed everything."
Translation: Late Night favorites like Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the Masturbating Bear, and the Year 2000, as well as plenty of other comedy sketches, will be joining Conan on his cross-country move to Los Angeles.
Conan said:
"[On 'Late Night'], we prided ourselves on having a lot of produced comedy, and I will probably try to continue that tradition," said O'Brien. "I think that's what I'm comfortable with."
But don't worry, not everythign will be the same. The Tonight Show will not become the Late Night show simply moved up an hour earlier.
O'Brien commented:
Clay Aiken is Not a Fan of Adam Lambert
Do I sense a cat fight coming on? Clay Aiken, an American Idol loser from the reality show's second season, wrote on his official fan site that he's no fan of fellow runner-up Adam Lambert.
"Now that it's all over, and for the record... I couldn't be happier about the way AI ended this year."
"I only turn the show on once a season, and only to see what the set looks like each year. This year, I happened to turn it during the minute that Adam Lambert was singing 'Ring of Fire' and, at that moment, thought my ears would bleed. Contrived, awful, and slightly frightening!"
"I wasn't really a fan and found myself surprised whenever folks told me that they liked him. Granted, I never saw another performance (and many folks who I trust said that he was great) but I can't imagine I would have enjoyed it. Just not my cup of tea at all."
Aiken also admits that he never saw AI's winner Kris Allen sing on the show, but does say that he is "likeable." He also believes that viewers voted against Lambert because of the "obvious bias" by judges:
